December is a time to put our troubles on the back burner and discover, and focus on, the joys of the holidays—family, friends, and that includes your garden. There is so much pleasure and therapeutic peace of mind that comes with tending to and beautifying your plant children, especially during this busy season.
Start by giving your plants a little extra attention to get them ready for the holidays.
Trim back branches that are too long and remove leaves that are withered or brown. A simple refresh can instantly make the garden look cleaner and more cared for, while also encouraging healthier growth.
Add some “sparkle”.
Winter is also a wonderful time to add fresh new additions to your plant family—especially plants that naturally brighten up the season. Consider nandinas, camellias, azaleas, cyclamen, and winter-blooming bulbs like amaryllis and narcissus. Their rich colors and blooms bring life and cheer to the garden when much of the landscape is resting.
And some “snacks”.
They can also use a good feeding too. Take advantage of the coming rainy season and apply fertilizer now so the rain delivers it deeply into their roots.
Once your plants are dressed and presentable enjoy the great feeling of seeing your garden as source of holiday joy!
